Wellness Exams

Annual wellness exams are important to detect any problems with your pet’s health before they become a serious issue. They are also a good evaluation of your pet’s general health. In a wellness exam, we assess heart and lung function, vision, hearing, weight, and overall health. Your pet will also be thoroughly checked for any signs of disease, infection, tumors, or other problems. Routine blood and urine testing is a great diagnostic tool for early detection of diseases and to get baseline values of younger pets, as well as to analyze the health of senior pets.

Microchipping

Microchipping is one of the best ways to reunite owners and pets in the unfortunate event that the pet gets lost. Microchips are the size of a grain of rice and are implanted right under the skin of a dog, cat, horse, parrot, or other animal. When scanned, the microchip emits a number which is then used to locate the phone number of the appropriate owner. Unlike collars or other accessories, microchips cannot be lost and are the most reliable form of identification on an animal. We have used microchips to locate owners and return animals within 1 hour of finding lost pets!

Vaccinations

Routine vaccinations are one of the key steps owners can take to prevent their pets from illnesses and death caused by infectious diseases. Vaccines protect by preparing the animals immune system to fight these diseases. Keeping up with your pets vaccines is one of the best ways to keep your pet (and other pets in your community) healthy! Dr. Byrd does not believe in over vaccinating pets- each vaccine protocol is individually tailored to each pet’s lifestyle.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture originated in China, and still incorporates traditional Chinese medicine as its principal practice and theory. Chinese medicine attributes disease to an imbalance in the flow of energies throughout the body. Acupuncture is a way to rebalance this flow of energy which creates a healthier body.In an acupuncture session, needles stimulate specific points on the body which release histamines, endorphins, and other chemicals. These chemicals block pain pathways and open up energy channels. Acupuncture has many different functions. It may be used to aide in disease treatment and reduce the amount of medicine administered, or can be used as a supplemental treatment alongside traditional veterinary medicine. Some conditions acupuncture may treat are dermatological, musculoskeletal, emotional/mental, digestive, and urinary. Dr. Reising is our acupuncturist. She is available Wednesdays and Thursdays for appointments. See her profile under the staff page.
